On this date, in 1941, the United States was attacked at Pearl Harbor by Japan and we declared war the next day. The United States entered into a period of traumatic events and sweeping changes socially, economically and politically. We were never the same.

As we near end the of Autumn Quarter, I wanted to remind everyone to check their due dates on library materials and be sure to return materials before you leave for break.

The library will be on reduced hours and be closed at times over break, so make sure you have all materials returned before December 21 or make sure you are able to renew them beyond January 2 due date.

We will be open December 5-11, 2011 normal hours (Monday-Thursday 8a-9p, Friday 8a-5p, but we will be now closed weekends.)

Last day for Saturday hours will be December 3, 2011.

New Ohio State University Partnership

The Ohio State University and Columbus State Community College have partnered at the Delaware Campus to provide OSU classes there. Part of the Ohio State Marion Campus class schedule, OSU students and Columbus State students can take classes from either or both schools.

The library is also partnering with the Learning Center at Columbus State Delaware to provide library services. Learning Center librarians will provide in-person assistance to all OSU students taking classes there as well as serving as the pick-up and drop-off site for library materials delivered there. The Marion Campus Library will continue to coordinate Closed Reserves there and the Marion Campus Librarian will provide all library instruction in the OSU classes.

Both schools are excited about the opportunity to provide additional educational opportunities to students and the libraries are also looking forward to serving your information needs. The Learning Center librarians are excellent and will be available to assist you. Their hours are different than the Marion Campus Library so be sure to check them out.

Settling in

Students are finally beginning to settle into the campus routine. Free ice cream happened yesterday and various other welcome activities occurred last week.

The OSU Music and Dance Library is settling into its new location within the Science and Engineering Library. Read more....

Assignments are appearing and students are starting to ask questions. The computers have had steady business since the quarter started. I've had several classes visit the library for orientation and several more scheduled.

Along with all the academic "stuff" you have to read and do, remember to take time for yourself. The Climbing Wall in the Student Center is one great stress-reliever on campus!

The collection includes books and media on exercise, meditation, handling stress, healthy cooking and even some help with those finances!

Campus Construction Winding Down

It looks as though much of the construction on campus is finally nearing completion. The new Marion Technical College Health Technologies Center opened last week; the front driveway was paved over the weekend and the two parking lots are getting closer but are not quite ready yet. Please be careful as you enter campus; there may be some parking issues when all Ohio State Marion students return on Wednesday, September 21.

Construction on Campus - Be Careful!

The Marion Campus has a lot of construction going on right now, so please be careful as you enter and exit campus.

The entrance has some construction so be patient if a lane may be temporarily closed and you have to wait.

Also, the OSUM Faculty and Staff lot and Parking Lot 2 is closed for resurfacing. Parking is available in Lot 3North. Lot 3South has some trucks and other equipment parked in it right now, so watch out as you enter the area; trucks are still coming in and out of the area.

You can still get to the library through Lot 2 and can park in Lot3North, which is next to the library.

Construction is expected to be completed by first day of classes, which is Spetember 14 for MTC and September 21 for OSUM.

Music and Dance Library Closed

The Ohio State University Music and Dance Library will be closed from September 1-20 as the collections and staff are moved to new permanent quarters in the Science and Engineering Library.

Music and Dance will re-open in Science and Engineering on Wednesday, September 21.

New Resource at OhioLINK

OhioLINK announces the launch of the OhioLINK Music Center (OMC), http://music.ohiolink.edu, featuring more than 78,000 tracks and 21,000 works from the Naxos Music Library. Users can search for and listen to tracks in six genres -- Chinese music, classical music, opera, jazz, spoken word and world music -- with works from many well-known composers, including Bach, Handel, Beethoven, Chopin, Strauss, Copeland, and Ellington.

Access to the music files is restricted to the students, faculty and staff of OhioLINK member institutions, and off-campus access is available. Flash player is required. Catalog records for the albums should be available in the central catalog in the next few weeks.

Ohio State Library Catalog to be down July 11

The Ohio State University Library Catalog, including Illiad, will be unavailable all day Monday 7/11/2011 as we migrate to a new server. Users will be unable to view records, renew items, place local or OhioLINK holds or place interlibrary loan or article express requests. Users may view WorldCat or OhioLINK to search OSU holdings and retrieve call numbers.

The library staff will not be able to view patron records or check out materials on the system.

We can, however, do a manual check-out for materials needed. Please be sure to bring your campus ID or library card to check out materials. We will do a manual check-out of any materials on Closed Reserve, too.

You should still be able to use the databases and search the OhioLINK catalog; you just won’t be able to request items.

Please contact library staff if you have questions.

OhioLINK Catalog to be Down July 7

This year the King James Bible (KJB) celebrates its 400th anniversary. Printed in 1611 after a seven-year translation effort undertaken by six teams of scholars and divines working at Oxford, Cambridge and Westminster, the KJB in the succeeding centuries has become one of the major monuments of English language and literature. The Rare Books and Manuscripts Library is hosting a major exhibition exploring the KJB, its medieval and early-English precursors, and its lasting influence on literary and cultural production from the date of its publication to the present day. This exhibition should feature something to suit everyone's tastes, including medieval manuscripts, original copies of the many different English Bible translations produced during the sixteenth century, literature and art inspired by the style, language and content of the Bible (such as works by John Milton, William Blake, Herman Melville, Cormac McCarthy, Barry Moser, Jim Dine, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and more), comic art and, of course, the KJB itself—from the seventeenth century to more recent editions.

The exhibition will be on display in the Thompson Library gallery from

Did you know that there are many types of information sources that can be used when conducting research? Everyone tends to focus on the electronically accessible types, but the library has a pamphlet file to give you additional information options!

The Pamphlet File (sometimes also called the Vertical File) usually includes newspaper articles, brochures, and pamphlet type items that are too small to catalog but still provide a good amount of information on topic.

We've been working on our file lately and my assistant Rebecca found some interesting subjects.

OhioLINK gets Grant

Great news from OhioLINK (posted April 7, 2011)

OhioLINK has been named a recipient of a $750,000 grant from Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC), a new initiative focused on identifying and scaling technology-enabled approaches to dramatically improve college readiness and completion, especially for low-income young adults. OhioLINK’s winning project will build off of its successful Ohio Digital Bookshelf program by creating multimedia and self-assessment tools to help students succeed in fundamental math and applied engineering courses. OhioLINK’s proposal was one of 29 recipients chosen out of 600 pre-proposals and 50 finalists.

NGLC is led by EDUCAUSE in partnership with The League for Innovation in the Community College, the International Association of K-12 Online Learning, and the Council of Chief State School Officers. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation helped design the Next Generation Learning Challenges, and fund the initiative.

“This grant funding from Next Generation Learning Challenges will provide a broader opportunity to help struggling students gain a better grasp on the fundamentals of math and applied engineering,” said Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Jim Petro. “The tools which come out of this program will help create a stronger workforce for Ohio.”

Updates in the Library

Thanks to all who patiently worked around our library renovation project during Winter Quarter.

We updated the computer area on the first floor and added additional computers with carrels. We now have 30 computers located around the library on both floors for you to use.

In addition, we have wireless available for both OSU and MTC and a few laptops available to borrow to use in the library.

Come see the changes we made (we moved some furniture around, too!)

We have put out what tax forms we have received. They are located in the library near the main stairwell in our literature rack.

We also received the Reproducible Forms book, so if you don't see a form you need, ask at the Circulation Desk. We keep the book there.

We have State of Ohio tax forms, too.

The library charges 10 cents per page to make copies.

For Those Who Search the OhioLINK Catalog

OhioLINK announced today that the look of the catalog has been "refreshed."

The changes to the catalog are concentrated on the look and feel of the interface. No changes have been made to the indexing or fundamental functions of the catalog.

Some interesting features to note:

the Library Holdings and Table of Contents boxes may now be minimized by clicking on the Hide link in the upper right of the box.
when possible, based on the metadata in the record, a link to the electronic version of content appears on the results list. To see examples of this you can do a keyword search on Hathi Trust, or Journal American history
action oriented buttons have been given different colors to make them stand out to the user

The end of Autumn Quarter is upon us! Many have finished or are finishing exams and last projects this week. Please remember to return any library materials before you leave campus for the break!

This is the last week for the library exhibit Harry Potter's World: Renaissance Science, Magic and Medicine. It will end December 11, 2010.

A final Harry Potter Program is scheduled for Tuesday, December 7 from 12-1 in the library. A presention on Herbology by Dr. Bob Klips will provide us an insight to some of those plants mentioned in the novels. Are they real or not?? Come and findout! Free and open to the public, it will be held on the second floor of the library itself. Light refreshments will be available, but feel free to bring your lunch, too!

We welcome all our new students, faculty and staff as well as all of our returning ones to a new quarter!

Marion Technical College started September 15 and Ohio State Marion Marion started this week on September 22.

It's great to see so many folks on campus again. Traffic in the library is picking up - great! Come visit us! We have lots to offer you!

The library has been busy over the summer improving services and collections. Along with more computers (we have 28 right now), we have begun building a Wellness Collection for students to provide another means for addressing the development of the whole student. The collection is still growing, but we have materials on stress reduction, exercise, diet and nutrition, sprituality and financial, among others. Located on our New Book cases near the front entrance, they can be identified by blue dots on their spines. I encourage the campus community to check them out!

The library is pleased to add Rebecca Sullivan to our staff temporarily. She will be our evening supervisor and staff our Delaware Center Service Center. Welcome Rebecca!

Break Hours for Library

The summer quarter is ending and the library will go to reduced hours for awhile.

From August 30 to September 14, the library will be open:

The Delaware Center will be open Mondays and Thursdays 11:30a - 2:30p during that same time.

Both locations will be closed September 6 for the Labor Day holiday.

Library Projects over Summer

The library has been busy this summer in that we have been working on different projects.

We recently added a bank of laptop workstations (8 total), moved a couple to other locations and will add 2 additional stations later this year. Eventually we will have 30 workstations available and a couple of quick-stop stations near the entrance. Be looking for them!

Our Maintenance department was in this week, working on changing light bulbs. A cumbersome job as they must carefully move a large lift around the various stacks and furniture, the operator did a great job and was out in no time! Our thanks for brightening up the library.

As Summer Quarter winds down and Autumn Quarter begins to creep closer, the library will be open between quarters. Please check our website for changes in the schedule.

If you are a new student this quarter, the library staff wishes you a warm welcome and an invitation to stop by the library and see what we are up to this quarter!

There is lots of space and computers for you to work on assignments as well as lots of materials to help you with your research, both in print and electronically. Just ask if you are having any problems.

The library is busy upgrading the library with enhanced services; you'll see more computers appear over the summer; we have lots of orientations on campus and you'll see parents and students dropping by to check us out; ever-changing displays; and always our friendly staff waiting to help you!

We also maintain a Library Service Center at the OSUM Delaware Center; we are working on some changes for that site, too! We'll keep you informed as the summer progresses.

Library Books

As the end of the quarter looms near it occurred to me that a gentle reminder to students to return any library books they have checked out would be needed. No one wants to have a fine of $140 for a lost and billed book added to their library account.

The library will be open the regular hours Monday-Thursday from 8am - 9pm and Friday 8am - 5pm during exam week so you can drop your books off before you leave campus after completing your finals.

The library staff hopes everyone has a great summer and if you are attending classes on campus this summer we hope to see you in the library.

Library Closing on May 14

Due to a scheduled power outage in the Library/Classroom Building, the library will be closed Friday May 14 from 12-5 p.m. We will be open from 8:00 a.m. 12:00 noon.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

If the rain cancels the power outage, we will remain open on May 14, but will close the following Friday, May 21 from 12- 5 p.m.

Kent State The Day the War Came Home

The Marion Campus Library will be showing the DVD Kent State: The Day the War Came Home on May 3, 2010 at the Delaware Center and May 4, 2010 at the Marion Campus Library.

This showing is for anyone who would like to join us. There will be light refreshments served at each viewing.

New Interim Executive Director of OhioLINK

The OhioLINK community recently lost its Executive Director, Tom Sanville. Tom resigned March 31 to accept a position elsewhere.

Chancellor Fingerhut appointed an Interim Executive Director while a search committee seeks to replace Tom.

John Magill, Chief Strategic Officer in the office of Policy Research and Strategic Planning for the Ohio Department of Development, will serve beginning April 1, 2010 and will continue until a permanent director takes office.

OhioLINK and its staff are committed to maintaining the services of OhioLINK during this transition period.

Library Fines

If you had library materials that were due Wednesday February 10th and you couldn't turn them in because the library was closed your fines (if any) will be waived for that day. When you return your materials to the circulation desk make sure that you wait to see if a fine has been incurred so that it can be removed promptly by library staff.

Libraries' Webpage Redesign

The OSU Libraries is developing a new webpage and is seeking feedback on various design possibilities:

"The Libraries are currently in the final phase of a web site redesign. Specifically, work is now proceeding on the development of the home page. The Libraries' staff is posting new "iterations" of the site every few weeks, and seeking comments and suggestions as the page layout and design continue to evolve. OSU Student Research Prize

Want a chance to win some money? OSU students have the opportunity to apply for The OSU Libraries Undergraduate Research Prize.

Students enrolled in 300 level or above classes can submit their research project. There are some requirements; students have to consult with a librarian, use library resources in their project, and have it graded by their faculty instructor. Students could win $750; the faculty member can win $250.

Tax Forms

The library has not received a complete shipment of tax forms yet, but do expect to put them out by end of the month.

State of Ohio tax forms will be late due to a printing delay. We hope to get them in the next month or so. If you need them in a hurry, you can visit the state site at http://tax.ohio.gov/forms/index.stm for forms.

National Puzzle Month

The library will be open limited hours over the break, and fines can accrue if you do not pay attention to your due dates.

The library will be closed from December 24 thru January 3, 2010, so if you have any materials that are recalled, you will need to return them to alternate OSU library locations.

Recycle Your Batteries!!!

The Marion Campus is now offering free recycling for your old batteries!

Small batteries, sizes A thru D, watch, calculator and cell phone batteries are welcome.

NO large-type batteries (such as a car battery)!

One-gallon white buckets are located in the Morrill Hall Student Lounge, the Library, the OSUM General Computer Lab (LC220), the MTC Student Lounge and at the Ohio State Delaware Center.

The batteries will be picked up as part of the general haz-mat collection on campus that occurs two or three times per year.

Be green! Bring in your batteries from home! Help us to keep the environment healthy!!

Help the OSUM Psychology Club

Each year, the OSUM Psychology sponsors a Marion Campus Giving Tree. The tree contains tags with Christmas wishes from several families they adopt for the holidays.

Trees are set up in Morrill Hall, Maynard Hall and the Library. Please stop by and take a tag or two and help make someone's Christmas a little brighter.

More Displays!!

The library is currently hosting displays on Physics and National Popcorn Month.

Physics is our highlighted science for October as part of our Year in Science celebration. Carol Bowman and Gordon Aubrecht from the OSUM Physics Dept. graciously developed the display. Antique instruments used in experiements are included.

Our popcorn display comes courtesy of the Marion County Historical Society, which houses the Wyandot Popcorn Museum.

Is it the Flu?

The season is here - flu, colds, H1N1 scares.

The library and campus are trying to help you stay healthy this year. Hand sanitzers are being installed in public parts of campus buildings as soon as possible.

The library has a bottle of hand sanitzer at the circulation desk. Feel free to make use of it - for eveyone's health!

We also wipe down the computer keyboards each night. We ask that if you are sick - please stay home and get better. Materials can be renewed online or even over the phone if you need it.

Library Headphones

The library has made many changes over the summer that will hopefully better serve the patrons of the library. One of the changes that you might not have noticed is that the library will no longer provide headphones for the computers starting Fall Quarter.

This decision was made for health reasons. With the possiblity of illness spreading rather easy the library staff felt it was in the best interest of all patrons.

We hope that everyone is having a great start to the Fall Quarter and we hope that you will use the library services during the quarter.

Access to Library Building Altered

Starting August 28, the sidewalk east of the library and the little bridge over the creek will be closed for about one year. Marion Technical College is beginning construction on their new Health Technolgies building just next to the library.

This means that there is NO access to the library from Student Parking Lot number 6. Folks who park in lot #6 will need to walk to the MTC building area and access the library from the bridge over the pond or another walkway.

Student Parking Lot 3N and 3S will still be accessible and close to the library.

OSUM Staff Arts & Crafts Exhibit

The new Thompson Library

Thompson Library opened unofficially on August 3, and has been busy ever since. A more formal opening was held Saturday, August 22.

Nominations open for 2009 Carnegie Corporation of New York/New York Times I Love My Librarian Award

NEW YORK – Nominations are open for the 2009 Carnegie Corporation of New York/New York Times I Love My Librarian Award.

The award invites library users to recognize the accomplishments of librarians in public, school, college, community college and university libraries for their efforts to improve the lives of people in their community. Nominations will run through October 9 and are being accepted online at ilovelibraries.org/ilovemylibrarian.

Up to 10 librarians will be selected. Each will receive a $5,000 cash award, a plaque and a $500 travel stipend to attend an awards ceremony and reception in New York, hosted by The New York Times in December. In addition, a plaque will be given to each award winner’s library.

Each nominee must be a librarian with a master’s degree from a program accredited by the ALA in library and information studies or a master’s degree with a specialty in school library media from an educational unit accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. Nominees must be currently working in the United States in a public library, a library at an accredited two- or four-year college or university or at an accredited K-12 school.

Nominees will be judged by a selection committee based on quality of service to library users, demonstrated knowledge of the library and its resources and commitment shown in helping library users.

In 2008, Carnegie Corporation of New York awarded the American Library Association (ALA) $489,000 to support the award, which will continue annually through 2013. The award continues in the tradition of one The New York Times presented from 2001 to 2006.

The award is administered by ALA’s Public Information Office and Campaign for America’s Libraries, ALA’s public awareness campaign that promotes the value of libraries and librarians.

Thompson Library Reopens!

Without fanfare, Ohio State University's Thompson (Main) Library reopened yesterday at 7:30 a.m after being closed for nearly three years for a multi-million dollar renovation.

What an awesome place! I got to tour it a week ago. Unbelievable! Glass walls, floating staircases, a Columbus Metropolitan Library mini-hub where you can check out materials from their collection or get a CML card. Many special collections now reside here with lots of display space.

The view from the 11th floor is way cool. From both sides.

Sadly, I could not see the newly restored Grand Reading Room; it was still being worked on.

You MUST go down and check it out at some point.

Music CD's Now Circulate!

Great news!

The campus library collection of music CD's are now available to borrow!

They are located in a black filing cabinet near the main library staircase. We have a sign on top of it, advertising the location.

They are filed in call number order, not by subject or category. Feel free to stop by and browse through the collection.

You can search for specific titles and subjects via the library catalog. MAR is our location code.

You will need your campus ID to check them out; they will circulate for one week, no renewals.

We hope this new access assists in your learning experience at the library!

Pardon our Dust and Noise

If you stop by the library this summer, I hope you pardon our noise and occasional dust as we work to shift the book collection around.

Please be sure to ask library staff if you have trouble finding anything. Some call number signs at the end of book stacks may not be current, so please ask if you need help.

Circulation Change

Effective July 1, the library changed its policy on periodicals that are checked out. Periodicals and pamphlets can be checked out for one week, no renewals. Previously, they could be checked out for three days with limited renewals. Campus IDs are still required to check out any library materials.

We hope this change will be of benefit to our users.

Welcome to Summer Quarter!

Today is the first day of Summer Quarter! The library staff welcomes you and hope you will seek us out for any research or information needs.

A very important fact to note is that you must be in our library system to be able to request books and gain off-campus access to library resources. IF YOU ARE A BRAND NEW STUDENT THIS QUARTER (ESPECIALLY MTC), YOU ARE MOST LIKELY NOT IN OUR SYSTEM.

You will need to get your campus photo ID taken (at the Alber Student Center) and bring it to the library so we can add you to our system. You will need to fill out a form also. You can go here, fill the form out, print it off and bring it with you when you come to the library.

Changes at University Libraries

Whiel we eagerly anticipate the re-opening of Thompson (Main) Library in August, other library changes are occuring.

The Busines Library has now closed and no longer exists as a separate department library. The collection is moving to Thompson (THO) or the Book Depository.

Ackerman Library, which served as the interim main library while the renovation was happening, has now closed permanently to the public. The collection is currently being moved into Thompson but materials can be requested for pick-up to your office or to another library location.

August 3 is the date set for Thompson to be opened to the public and a formal opening will happen on August 22.
